PVC Compounds for Cables: Evolution and Misconceptions on Their Fire Safety and Environmental Impacts
Speaker: Gianluca Sarti, VinylPlus Cables/Reagens
At the Nordic Fire & Safety Days, this presentation will examine how modern PVC cable compounds perform in relation to fire safety, smoke toxicity and environmental impact. PVC remains widely used in building and construction because of its low ignitability, limited flame spread and very low heat release rate, yet PVC cables have lost market share in Europe due to concerns about smoke acidity, density and toxicity under the Construction Products Regulation.
The presentation addresses whether these concerns reflect real fire-safety risks, or whether current test and classification methods disproportionately penalise PVC cables. Drawing on recent work with low smoke acidity PVC compounds, it compares modern PVC cable formulations with halogen-free flame-retardant alternatives, with particular focus on heat release rate, hydrogen chloride emissions, carbon monoxide, smoke toxicity and evacuation-relevant fire scenarios.
A central theme is the difference between small-scale furnace tests and large-scale cable testing based on EN 50399. The findings indicate that modern low smoke acidity PVC compounds can significantly reduce HCl emissions under pre-flashover conditions, while retaining PVC’s inherent fire-performance advantages. The presentation therefore raises the question of whether regulatory approaches to cable acidity should be reconsidered in light of current cable technologies and more realistic fire testing methods.
The session is relevant for fire scientists, regulators, cable manufacturers, building professionals and others interested in fire dynamics, fire chemistry, evacuation safety, smoke toxicity and material choice in construction products.
